I’m getting hints from all sorts of different places that there may be some rather large reviews coming Houston way some time soon. I’d love to hear any info anyone has on that front.

Also, I think the hundred or so attorneys that were toiling away over at EQD the last couple of weeks have been slowly draining away from that project.

New Year, new work

I’ve been quiet a while, but the market hasn’t. I didn’t really notice a Winter break in projects, but it seems they’re picking up.

Providus has a project coming up.

Hudson has a couple of projects that started recently or will start on Monday in Dallas.

Special Counsel is looking for people.

Donovan Watkins is putting 130 lawyers in 2 shifts up at the Clay Road review center for Anadarko.

Only thing is that most of the rates I’ve seen on all of these except Providus are sub $30.

De Novo is the only place I’ve seen more than once advertise for UN-licensed law grads rather than licensed probably so they can justify paying $25 per hour instead of a more reasonable rate. They have one such project starting next Monday, Dec. 7.

At least it gets the recent grads some work…I guess.

Also, thinking about the Stanford criminal trial that will be tried in Houston, in Judge Hittner’s court, the govt. collected a lot of info. For the receivership, FTI has billed for collection of “over 500 hard drives, dozens of flash drives, CD’s, DVDs, dozens of portable hard drives, over 140 Email PST’s with attachments, individual and group share drives, and 120 file shares and 38 servers.” Sounds like there may be a lot of documents in there to be reviewed. That’s good news. Unless you’re one of the defendants … or the person paying to defend someone.

While it does seem like a happy thing that someone is looking around to fill a few seats in a review in Dallas, and even better that the review is slated to last through next March, the prospect is somewhat dimmed by the prospect of being locked into a pay rate of $26 until then.

More Good News

Just heard that Hudson wants 7 more people over in Austin for a rate that begins with the “3″ digit instead of the “2″ digit. That’s good news.

Found out about a small Special Counsel review I hadn’t heard about before. That’s good news.

Heard about a small-medium sized project that is expanding soon (Providus). That’s good news.

Other stuff in the works. If you hear anything, let me know and I’ll post it.

I like to see the market pick up like this.

Aphelion is looking for some attorneys. Granted, they sent the same add to the Dallas, Houston and New York market, but at least they have work.

Hudson has sent out a couple of calls in the last week or so.

Pye legal sees some action coming down the pike this fall.

Providus has a few projects ongoing, and some on the way.

Good news all, I just hope they’re not all bidding on the same jobs. Anyway, sounds like we may be able to count on the Obama administration to keep the heat on FCPA and mergers.

I’ve been sensing some serious downward movement in rates this year. Do you agree? I’ve seen more and more reviews advertised with rates in the 20’s.

How can we get a feel for how many people are out there who are willing to sign up for a project for $25. I know that I wouldn’t be able to afford to do it. There just aren’t enough hours in the day. There’s probably a bell curve that fits this, but I really wonder what people are thinking about working for low rates. Besides the fact that it sucks.

One thing that’s very hard to do if you’re working for that kind of rate is muster up any sort of loyalty to be able to tell the next project “no” because you’re already committed to one. IF I was working for $25 and a job came up that could pay $35, how in the world would you deal with sticking with your “committment” to the job that only pays 25?

First, the hard stuff.

Pye has something brewing with a few lawyers. Hire counsel says they have immediate openings. A friend of mine from Austin said Ajilon was wanting some attorneys for a review on very short notice.

Sounds like an end of the year rush to clean up a few straggler projects. Maybe it’s more than that. We’ll have to see.

Now, into the realm of rumor.

I heard that V&E may be looking to put together a review of some sort.
